![]() ![]() So back rows deal way less damage if they ATTACK with melee weapons.Īnd back rows receive less damage when they are HIT with melee weapons.News JEtrian Odyssey Origins Collection has been released. Just to make it clear, you do receive less damage in the back row if the enemy isn't doing some ranged attack(Bow/Magic), I believe this is because back rows get a Defense/Vitality boost before getting hit by any kind of melee attack(you don't see this buff or numbers but it is happening behind the scene). Which is another reason the back row is more safe. If back row enemies have no ranged attacks, they can only attack your Front row. With melee attacks(anything not ranged or a Spear depending on the game), a front row attacker can attack both the enemy Front/Back row, but if your Sword user is in the back row then they can only attack the enemy Front row. ![]() Melee attacks just deal less damage if the character attacking is in the back-row in general.Īlso remember this, enemies can also be in a front/back row formation and deal with the same "rules" you have. The later ones tend to be a little more forgiving but they are all good and there's no story connection. Honestly, you can start with any of them. The later games are a bit better at encouraging more varied viable builds by splitting elemental damage and healing across more classes. One area mages excel is because they tend to get the area attack elemental attacks, which then synergises with melee characters with chase/link abilities. It's worth making sure your team has access to elemental attacks as well as physical, but you don't necessarily need mage units for that- various classes have skills that add fire/ice/volt. Some of the games bring character race into it too, like V having some races prefer certain classes. ![]() Most games have a mix of more 'normal' classes and more interesting ones, Nexus has the most at 19(!). But a bit of experimentation and investigating their skill trees when setting the party up can find some really effective synergies. Ultimately you can put together a fairly 'normal' RPG team- a Landsknecht is a Warrior, a Protector is a Tank etc. Some classes play heavily on inflicting or chasing binds. A bound head can't cast spells or use roars/breath weapons, and bound arms limit almost all weapon skills. Any PC or enemy that has legs bound can't flee (player) and cant use charge attacks (monster). Some classes can link attacks, effectively following up a fire attack from another party member with a free firelink attack of their own.įinally, binds are a big part of it. However, as the games have progressed they've introduced more and more esoteric classes, as buffs, debuffs, binds and link/chains count for a lot.įor example, the Sovereign class is based around buffing and healing your team, with added bonus effects based on stacking and cancelling those buffs. Generally you want melee types and tanks up front, mages, healers and ranged units in the back, same as any RPG. They do vary in price and it looks based on how old or new they are, so I might be inclined to spend a little less if possible to make sure it's something I'll like, but I'm not sure if that will do me any favors in getting me invested in the game, if that makes sense.Īnd I put 3DS in the title because I don't know if there were other games prior on the DS.Įdit: well it looks like there's a demo for IV, so I might grab that now but I'd still like to see if that's maybe the best place to startĬlick to shrink.Honestly, you can start with any of them. So I decided I'd ask to see what you all might think is the best place to start for a complete novice. Also it looks like builds are a pretty core part of this series, maybe a recommendation or two on what to think about and make a proper/decent team would be nice too. I've seen the latest game just released but some are saying to not play it as your first due to references, etc. I'm looking at the eShop and it looks like I can buy just about all of the 3DS versions but I'm pretty clueless on where to start. ![]()
